There are various modes that the player can choose to play. There are currently total of 5 game modes in Baldi's Basics Plus and 2 in Baldi's Basics Classic and Baldi's Basics Birthday Bash. However, there is no option to choose the game modes in demos, except for the Kickstarter Exclusive Demo.
While Baldi's Basics Classic Remastered also has 2 modes at the beginning, there are 5 more hidden modes that are accessible by entering the respective codes in the You Can Think Pad or progressing the game.

Story Mode[]
- Main article: Story Mode
Story Mode is the main mode in Baldi's Basics Classic, Baldi's Basics Birthday Bash and Baldi's Basics Classic Remastered. The object is to collect 7 notebooks and then escape the school by reaching all four exits.
Endless Mode[]
- Main article: Endless Mode
Endless Mode is the secondary mode in the Baldi's Basics series. The goal is to collect as many notebooks as possible before Baldi catches the player.
Baldi's Basics Plus exclusive[]
Hide-and-Seek[]
- Main article: Hide-and-Seek
Hide-and-Seek is the main mode in Baldi's Basics Plus. The object is to complete all floors before running out of power tubes.
Completing the Hide-and-Seek mode for the first time will allow the player to enter a custom seed before playing Hide-and-Seek/Explorer Mode.
Tutorial[]

The Tutorial teaches the player how to play Baldi's Basics Plus. Upon playing the game for the first time, the player can choose whether or not they want to beat this mode.
Challenge Mode[]

Challenge Mode shows the list of challenges to play.
Field Trips[]

Field Trips mode shows available field trips to play endlessly. Here, the player can set high scores or just practice.

Baldi's Basics Plus[]
- mystman12 considered adding a mode that will allow the player to set custom parameters.[1]
- Prior to V0.9, the Explorer Mode existed in the mode selection screen, and there was no tutorial mode.
- Since this version, Explorer Mode has been moved to the Hide-and-Seek menu.
Baldi's Basics Classic[]
- Prior to V1.3, there was no game mode selection, but only Story Mode is available.
- Since V1.4, the Endless Mode button and the BACK button have switched positions.
- On mobile, "Wear headphones for the best experience!" text is added in the middle.
Baldi's Basics Classic Remastered[]

Demos[]
- In Baldi's Basics Full Game Early Demo, Hide-and-Seek was first introduced and is the only mode available.
- In Baldi's Basics Kickstarter Exclusive Demo, only Hide-and-Seek and Explorer Mode are available.
- Additionally, the names in the mode selection screen are different. Hide-and-Seek is named as "Main Mode" and Explorer Mode is named as "Free Run Mode."
- In Baldi's Basics - Challenges Demo, only Challenges mode is available.
