Chalkles spawned in faculty room

Chalkles is a chalk-drawn character in Baldi's Basics Plus and Demo Style of Baldi's Basics Classic Remastered.

Description

Chalkles appears as a scribbled face drawn in chalk. The circular face is drawn with a "mustache", two buck teeth, a comb-over, a button nose, glasses, and two eyes. The left eye is bigger than the right.

Personality

Chalkles' description from the Principal's office suggests that he loves causing mischief around the Super Schoolhouse.

Upon entering the classroom or the faculty room, Chalkles will appear on an empty chalkboard in one of the classrooms or rarely in faculty rooms, slowly becoming solid as the player stays in the room. The player has 20 seconds to leave the room before Chalkles pops out. While the player is not in a room, Chalkles will cool down a fourth as quickly as he becomes solid (meaning that he will cool down for 80 seconds at maximum), but once they enter one of the rooms with him, he will start to become solid based on time that the player leaves a room. After said time in the room when Chalkles becomes completely solid, he will pop out of the chalkboard and then rotate around the room while making a creepy laugh-like sound, attracting Baldi and Dr. Reflex to Chalkles' location and preventing the player from escaping the room for 15 seconds.

Chalkles will stay active for at least 25 seconds. After 15 seconds, he ascends to the ceiling, distorting and clipping through. At that time, the player will now be able to open the door. He will finally leave after 10 seconds.

Other appearances

• In Baldi's Basics Classic Remastered, Chalkles is one of the three characters who exclusively appears in Demo Style, along with Beans and Cloudy Copter. He only spawns in classrooms.
• In Baldi's Basics Kickstarter Exclusive Demo, prior to V1.3, Chalkles would only spawn in classrooms, and if Chalkles was close enough to an elevator, he could trigger it to close.

Pros & Cons

Advantages

• It is, however, possible to escape the room when Chalkles become solid, by:
  • Using the Principal's Keys to unlock the door(s).
  • Getting sent to detention by Principal of the Thing.
  • Using the Dangerous Teleporter item to teleport out of the room.
  • Being teleported by Arts and Crafters.
  • Going out of the room or heading into a whirlpool during the flood event.
  • Using the Portal Poster to go through the walls.
  • Getting off the room after Mrs. Pomp opens the locked door when she enters or exits the room.

Neutral

• If the player wears the Faculty Nametag, Chalkles will disappear. Even if the item's effect expires, he will not spawn until they enter the room without the Nametag. However, when using this item after Chalkles spawns, the player cannot open any door right away and they have to wait for 15 seconds, in case the item is used right after he spawns.
• If Chalkles spawn in the faculty room, it may be risky, as the Principal of the Thing would have a chance to enter the room and outright takes the player to detention for it. However, this can be prevented by walking to the corner and use the Dirty Chalk Eraser, only when the sound of the Principal knocking on the door is heard.

Disadvantages

• Before reaching Mrs. Pomp's classroom in time, allowing Chalkles to spawn can be time consuming.
• Along with It's a Bully, Beans' bubble gum and using the BSODA to try slowing down or pushing Chalkles will not work.
• He is the only character not to be squished by Dr. Reflex's hammer.

Trivia

General

• Chalkles's design was originated from a drawing image by mystman12 and his sister in PictoChat. The image was combined with random images and the centered part resembles a creepy face, giving mystman12 an idea to turn it into a Baldi's Basics character.
• Chalkles' original image was first used in Full Game Early Demo, however he does not have a fully-functioned AI and was just added as a teaser for his incoming appearance. Chalkles later made his first physical debut in Kickstarter Exclusive Demo but has a redesigned sprite.
• Although the Principal's Office description refers Chalkles as an "it", mystman12 confirms Chalkles as male.
• Chalkles' name is likely a pun by the two words "chalk" and "chuckles" mixed together, hence his appearance and laughter.
• mystman12 did not remember what software he used to create Chalkles' sound effects, but seems to recall using some unknown music software as well.
• Chalkles is currently the only character to not have any benefits in any way for helping the player against Baldi, as his primary function is to lure Baldi towards the classroom where the player is contained in

Baldi's Basics Plus

• Chalkles is one of the five characters that can attract Baldi, with the other four being 1st Prize, Arts and Crafters, Principal of the Thing, and Mrs. Pomp.
• The audio files of Chalkles have same prefix (Chk) as the chalkboards' file name, except that it is capitalized.
• The way Chalkles spins extremely rapidly and distorts through the ceiling is similar to the way Arts and Crafters does when he is about to teleport the player to a random location.
• He is the smallest character in the game.
• This is the only character to only appear inside the rooms but not around the hallways.
• So far, It's a Bully, The Test and Chalkles are the only characters not to visit the party event.
• Prior to V0.4, Chalkles spawned only in classrooms and he would immediately cool down after the player exited a classroom.
• In V0.4, Chalkles did not spin rapidly as he traveled through the ceiling.

Baldi's Basics Classic Remastered

• In Demo Style, Chalkles can spawn on the wall connected to the entrance of Baldi's Basement. In that case, Portal Poster cannot be used on this wall, so the player has to restart the game to make Chalkles spawning elsewhere.

Glitches

Baldi's Basics Plus

• If the player goes into a room from another room, Chalkles will not spawn in the room the player goes into.
• Prior to V0.1.4, there was no fade-in effect when Chalkles is trying to pop out from the chalkboard, though there was in Kickstarter Exclusive Demo.
• In V0.1.5, Chalkles' sprite on the chalkboard could only be seen if the player was on any sides of the chalkboard due to a rendering error. It could also seem cropped when the player was on almost front by the sides. This has been fixed in V0.2.
